Complexity and Determinism in Linguistic Computation Phases and Cartography in Phrase Structure Building

چکیده

Developing linguistic resources (such as lexica, grammars etc.) that can be used both in parsing and in generation is an extremely difficult task. Nonetheless, thinking about this option is useful in order to highlight properties of the linguistic competence that seem to be cognitively motivated. The standard minimalist approach (Chomsky 1995-2001) sketches a model that does not fit in any clear way with specific performance algorithms such as parsing or generation even though much emphasis is put on “interface properties”. The grammar formalized in these pages (based on Stabler 1997) keeps into account some important constraints posed both by the generation and by the parsing problems, eventually defining a model that is: a. usable both in parsing and in generation; b. cognitively motivated; c. tractable; d. mainly deterministic. In particular, to achieve these results, I will focus on three important properties: 1. structure building operations (an algorithm specification for building phrases) can be included as part of the grammar if they apply top-to-bottom, from left-to-right; 2. using a Linearization Principle (inspired by Kayne’s LCA, Kayne 1994) and fixing the functional structure by means of a universal hierarchy (cartographic approach, Belletti ed. 2002, Cinque 1999, ed. 2002, Rizzi 1997, ed. 2002 and related works) makes the algorithm mainly deterministic; 3. formalizing phases (Chomsky 1999) helps us making the algorithm (that should deal at least with ambiguities and long distance relations) tractable; A plausible conclusion we could draw from these results is that these properties are not only cognitively plausible, but also formally and computationally more than welcome.

On directionality of phrase structure building.

Minimalism in grammatical theorizing (Chomsky in The minimalist program. MIT Press, Cambridge, 1995) led to simpler linguistic devices and a better focalization of the core properties of the structure building engine: a lexicon and a free (recursive) phrase formation operation, dubbed Merge, are the basic components that serve in building syntactic structures. Here I suggest that by looking at ...

A duality between LM-fuzzy possibility computations and their logical semantics

Let X be a dcpo and let L be a complete lattice. The family σL(X) of all Scott continuous mappings from X to L is a complete lattice under pointwise order, we call it the L-fuzzy Scott structure on X. Let E be a dcpo. A mapping g : σL(E) −> M is called an LM-fuzzy possibility valuation of E if it preserves arbitrary unions. Denote by πLM(E) the set of all LM-fuzzy possibility valuations of E. T...

Efficient implementation of low time complexity and pipelined bit-parallel polynomial basis multiplier over binary finite fields

This paper presents two efficient implementations of fast and pipelined bit-parallel polynomial basis multipliers over GF (2m) by irreducible pentanomials and trinomials. The architecture of the first multiplier is based on a parallel and independent computation of powers of the polynomial variable. In the second structure only even powers of the polynomial variable are used. The par...

Do Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?

Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...

A Linguistic Study on the Translation of Parvin E’tesami’s Poems into English Using Catford’s Category Shifts

The present study aimed to investigate the translation into English by Alaeddin Pazargadi of Parvin E’tesami’s poems; in particular, it attempted to analyze the structural elements such as verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, articles, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections in them. Considering the relationship between Linguistics and Translation Studies, the theoretical framewor...
